Johnson Johnson to Cut 3000 jobs in Medical Devices Division

first_img –shares Johnson & Johnson to Cut 3,000 jobs in Medical Devices Division Healthcare conglomerate Johnson & Johnson said it would cut about 3,000 jobs within its medical devices division, or between 4 percent and 6 percent of the unit’s global workforce, over the next two years. The company said on Tuesday that it expected to record pre-tax restructuring charges of $2 billion to $2.4 billion in connection with these plans, of which about $600 million will be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2015.Leerink analysts said the announcement meant that an acquisition was still on the cards for J&J, given that it had about $37 billion in cash as of the end of the third quarter.”We continue to believe J&J is an active acquirer with a focus likely heavily weighted toward it’s lagging Medical Devices business…it’s a matter of when, not if, J&J does a deal”, they wrote in a note.J&J also reiterated its full-year 2015 forecast, and said the restructuring in the devices business move would not impact the $10 billion share repurchase program. The company said the restructuring would affect its orthopaedics, surgery and cardiovascular businesses within the larger medical devices unit. The consumer medical devices, vision care and diabetes care, part of the same division, would not be affected, J&J said. The restructuring is expected to result in annualized pre-tax cost savings of $800 million to $1 billion, J&J said. Most of these savings are expected by the end of 2018, including about $200 million in 2016.New Brunswick, N.J.-based J&J currently employs about 60,000 within its medical devices unit, part of a global workforce of about 127,000.The Band-Aid maker is expected to report its fourth quarter results on Jan. 26.The company’s shares rose about 1 percent to $98.25 in premarket trading.(Reporting by Natalie Grover in Bengaluru; Editing by Ted Kerr, Robin Paxton and Savio D’Souza) Layoffs Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. Osteoporosis is not only a womens disease

Reviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Dec 18 2018UMass Lowell wins $2.6 million grant to study bone health in menOsteoporosis, a bone disease that can result in painful fractures – typically in the back, hip or wrist – is often thought of as a woman’s disease. But men get it too, just usually later in life than women.Segment the population even more and researchers find that Puerto Rican men who live on the U.S. mainland are at much greater risk of thinning bones than previously thought. Researchers at UMass Lowell will assess bone strength and nutrition among men and women in this population in a study that could lead to improvements in treatments for all people who suffer from osteoporosis. The National Institutes of Health has awarded $2.6 million to UMass Lowell researchers to evaluate bone health risks among this population. The research team is led by UMass Lowell Prof. Katherine Tucker and includes assistant professors Kelsey Mangano and Sabrina Noel of the Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences Department.Related StoriesTop four things seniors need to know to have a safe and healthy summerUMN research evaluates impact of multimorbidity on hip fracture probability in older womenPenn study reveals link between mitochondrial damage and osteoporosisThis study is among the first of its kind to examine whether differences in bone strength between adults with and without Type 2 diabetes are due in part to compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs).Found in many foods and formed when meats are grilled, roasted, seared, fried or baked, AGEs contribute to increased oxidant stress and inflammation, which are linked to the recent epidemics of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”Studying the relation of AGEs to bone health is novel among humans,” said Tucker, who also leads UMass Lowell’s Center for Population Health. “We expect that the research results will provide insight for developing interventions to prevent bone loss and fracture risk in adults.”The UMass Lowell team will study about 800 people living in the Boston area who are also participants in the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study Projects, which is a series of in-depth studies conducted over the past 12 years that has allowed researchers to follow the nutrition and health risk factors of 1,500 members of this population.Participants in the UMass Lowell study will complete a questionnaire, provide blood samples and get bone scans. In addition to the bone mineral density test that measures bone loss, the research team will use a new approach that assesses bone strength.”We know now that the bone density scans that we use today do not capture the full extent of fracture risk,” said Tucker. “In our study, we’ll be using microindentation, a new test that measures bone material strength. Using this new method in combination with the bone mineral density test will give us a better picture of bone health as it relates to nutrition and other health factors.”Early this year, Tucker received a $3.9 million grant from the NIH to study the effect of highly processed foods on dementia in this same population. Older adults care about strangers welfare in financial decisionmaking study finds

first_imgReviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Dec 30 2018A recent study by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) found that when it comes to making financial decisions under risk, older adults will regard the financial outcomes of others’ as their own and make choices that they would have selected for themselves.”Citizens in approximately one third of the countries around the world rely heavily on decisions made by older adults who may be government, business or community leaders. It is important to not only understand how these elderly people make decisions for themselves, but also how they make decisions on behalf of others, as their decisions can lead to significant gains or losses,” said team leader Assistant Professor Yu Rongjun, who is from the Department of Psychology at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The results of this study were reported in the journal Psychology and Aging in September 2018.Closing the knowledge gap in financial decision-makingPeople often need to make financial choices for themselves, and sometimes, on behalf of others. Studies have shown that younger adults take more risks when making financial decisions for others. However, there is a lack of understanding about the decision-making behavior of the elderly. To address this knowledge gap, Asst Prof Yu and his team conducted studies to compare how younger adults and older adults make financial decisions, both for themselves and for others. The NUS study was conducted from 2016 and 2017, and involved 191 Singaporean participants. Among them, 93 were older adults with an average age of 70, while 98 were young adults averaging 23 years old.The participants were asked to complete a series of computerized decision-making tests in which they were assessed based on the choices they made under uncertainties. The research team used computational modeling to analyze two aspects of the participants’ financial decision-making: loss aversion, which is a tendency to weight potential losses more strongly than potential gains; risk-aversion asymmetry, which looks at the tendency to be risk-averse for potential gains and risk-seeking for potential losses.Financial decisions vary with age Related StoriesBridging the Gaps to Advance Research in the Cannabis IndustrySchwann cells capable of generating protective myelin over nerves finds researchScientists develop universal FACS-based approach to heterogenous cell sorting, propelling organoid researchThe results show that when younger adults are making financial decisions on behalf of others, they take more risks even when the decisions put the person they are acting for at a disadvantage. For the seniors, they make similar choices for themselves and when they act for others. Hence, the findings suggest that older adults care more about strangers’ welfare.”Our results demonstrate that decision-makers of different age groups have different motivational goals. The young adults may treat the finances of others’ differently from their own, perhaps regarding them as being less important. On the other hand, the older generation may care more about social harmony and emotional experience, and have less emphasis on material gains,” explained Asst Prof Yu.He further elaborated, “Although we did not manipulate decision-making power and participants simply made choices for strangers in our study, we speculate that similar age-dependent decision-making patterns may also apply to real-life workplace. For instance, a young boss may choose one insurance plan for his employees and another plan for himself. The plan that he picks for others may be more risky and potentially disadvantageous compared to the plan he chooses for himself. On the other hand, an older boss is likely to select the same plan for his staff and himself. The findings of this study resonate with our earlier research which showed older adults are more generous towards strangers.”To deepen their understanding on the financial decision-making process of people from different age groups, Asst Prof Yu and his team will be conducting neuroimaging studies to examine the underlying neural basis of their observations. Fugitive Bill turns an Opposition stick to beat govt with

first_img SHARE SHARE EMAIL July 25, 2018 COMMENT PIYUSH GOYAL, Interim Finance Minister   –  PTI Elders pass legislation but use debate to accuse Centre of letting offenders flee economic offencecenter_img A week after the Lok Sabha passed the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, the Rajya Sabha, too, gave its nod to the legislation proposed to prevent economic offenders from fleeing the country. The debate on the Bill, however, turned political as the Opposition used the opportunity to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for the Centre’s “inability” to stop accused in various cases Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi, Nirav Modi, and Lalit Modi from leaving the country. The Opposition MPs said non-performing assets (NPAs) had become a “systemic crisis” under the NDA government and alleged that the PM, who promised that he would be a chowkidar (gatekeeper) of the country, seems to have “slept during his duty”. The BJP countered it by saying that the NPAs are a legacy of the previous UPA government, and that the new Bill would ensure that offenders would not leave the country without facing punishment.Stand-in Finance Minister Piyush Goyal said the Bill would help the Centre deal with “severity of the problem”. Current laws, he said, do not allow the government to impound the culprit’s property. “This Bill is an effective, expeditious and constitutional way to stop these offenders from running away. Legislative changes must be in place to confiscate assets of such absconders till they don’t present themselves in front of the courts. We will also work out what has to be done with the confiscated assets,” Goyal said.Trinamool Congress member Sukhendu Shekhar Roy said fixing a minimum threshold of ₹100 crore would only help the culprits, as they could form 20 or more companies, and seek loans in the name of each. Congress MP Vivek Tankha said only 10 per cent of black money existed outside the country; he asked the Centre for the details of the measures it had taken to recover ill-gotten wealth within. Tankha questioned the Centre’s wisdom in fixing the minimum cap of ₹100 crore. “Even an offender of ₹10 crore is bad,” he added. Goyal, however, justified the financial limit and said the measure was to “catch the big offenders and not to clog the courts”.Neeraj Shekhar of the SP alleged that several economic offenders had left the country with the “active support” of the Centre. “Make laws which can be implemented. How much black money has come back to the country in the last four years?” he asked.Later talking to reporters, Congress MP and spokesperson MV Rajeev Gowda said there are wide legal loopholes in the “hurriedly brought” Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill. “If the constitutionally problematic sections are struck down – nothing worthwhile shall remain in the Bill – it is in no way different from existing law. Is this not just a ‘face-saving exercise’ after Modi government’s massive failure to tackle 13 bank loot scams worth ₹70,000 crore where at least half a dozen people have officially run away after duping banks? Where are the extradition treaties with those countries to bring these fugitives back?” Published on SHARE COMMENTSlast_img read more

RS bypolls Fearing crossvoting Gujarat Congress shifts its MLAs to Mount Abu

first_imgpolitics Since the 2017 elections, at least six Congress MLAs have changed sides to join the BJP On a day when Rahul Gandhi officially resigned as Congress President and asked the party’s Working Committee to find his replacement, the Gujarat unit of the party was fighting its own battle as it struggled to keep its flock together. Fearing cross-voting in by-polls to the two Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat, the State Congress decided to move its MLAs to Mount Abu in Rajasthan to keep them away from the reach of the ruling BJP. The Congress camp in Gujarat is facing discontent among some of its MLAs who are likely to cross-vote in favour of BJP candidates — S Jaishankar and Jugalji Thakor. The Congress has fielded former MLA Chandrika Chudasama and Gaurav Pandya.Since the 2017 elections, at least six Congress MLAs have changed sides to join the BJP. There is also a strong possibility that rebel Congress MLA and OBC leader Alpesh Thakor and some of his supporting legislators may cross-vote in the Rajya Sabha polling scheduled for Friday. The two Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat were vacated by Union Ministers Amit Shah and Smriti Irani following their election to Lok Sabha from the Gandhinagar and Amethi constituencies, respectively. Congress MLAs led by the Leader of Opposition, Paresh Dhanani, boarded a private bus on Wednesday to travel towards Mount Abu. According to Congress leaders, all but rebel Congress MLAs were travelling together. Dhanani could not be reached for comments. ‘A precautionary move’The party officials termed this as a “precautionary move” to “thwart any attempt by the ruling BJP to influence the MLAs for cross-voting.”Last month, the Congress had directed its legislators to refrain from meeting Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel or other ministers even for matters related to their Assembly constituencies, till the Rajya Sabha by-polls are over. Earlier this week, the Congress issued a whip to all its legislators, including Alpesh Thakor, to vote in favour of the party’s two candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections. ‘Cong has slim chance’But if polling for both the seats are held separately , the Congress is set to lose both the seats for want of numbers as all MLAs would exercise their first preference votes twice. Therefore, the BJP, which has the numerical strength of 100 as against 71 of the Congress, is likely to win both seats.During the Rajya Sabha polls in August 2017, the Congress had moved 44 of its MLAs to a resort in Anand and then to Bengaluru to avoid horse trading and ensure a victory for Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
