Johnson Johnson to Cut 3000 jobs in Medical Devices Division

first_img –shares Johnson & Johnson to Cut 3,000 jobs in Medical Devices Division Healthcare conglomerate Johnson & Johnson said it would cut about 3,000 jobs within its medical devices division, or between 4 percent and 6 percent of the unit’s global workforce, over the next two years. The company said on Tuesday that it expected to record pre-tax restructuring charges of $2 billion to $2.4 billion in connection with these plans, of which about $600 million will be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2015.Leerink analysts said the announcement meant that an acquisition was still on the cards for J&J, given that it had about $37 billion in cash as of the end of the third quarter.”We continue to believe J&J is an active acquirer with a focus likely heavily weighted toward it’s lagging Medical Devices business…it’s a matter of when, not if, J&J does a deal”, they wrote in a note.J&J also reiterated its full-year 2015 forecast, and said the restructuring in the devices business move would not impact the $10 billion share repurchase program. The company said the restructuring would affect its orthopaedics, surgery and cardiovascular businesses within the larger medical devices unit. The consumer medical devices, vision care and diabetes care, part of the same division, would not be affected, J&J said. The restructuring is expected to result in annualized pre-tax cost savings of $800 million to $1 billion, J&J said. Most of these savings are expected by the end of 2018, including about $200 million in 2016.New Brunswick, N.J.-based J&J currently employs about 60,000 within its medical devices unit, part of a global workforce of about 127,000.The Band-Aid maker is expected to report its fourth quarter results on Jan. 26.The company’s shares rose about 1 percent to $98.25 in premarket trading.(Reporting by Natalie Grover in Bengaluru; Editing by Ted Kerr, Robin Paxton and Savio D’Souza) Layoffs Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. More Than 130000 People Have Already PreOrdered Teslas 35000Model 3

Tesla shares have jumped in recent days in anticipation of the Model 3 launch. The Model 3 will enter a crowded field of luxury and electric cars that includes gasoline-fueled models such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series, and electric models such as the forthcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV from General Motors Co.”Do you want to see the car?” teased Musk, to screams from the audience in the hangar-sized facility inside a Tesla design center. “We don’t have it for you tonight — just kidding!”Three Model 3s were driven onstage. The compact sleek four-door car with no grille features a roof that is a panoramic pane of glass from front to back.Musk said that 115,000 pre-orders had already been taken on Thursday alone for the car. Within a half hour, that number reached 137,600 in a rolling scroll projected onto a screen.Fans had camped out overnight, queueing outside Tesla stores across California to put down deposits on the car in scenes reminiscent of the launch of Apple Inc. products. The Model 3 is crucial for Tesla to reach its goal of selling 500,000 cars per year by 2020. The success of Tesla’s Gigafactory, its battery factory near completion in Nevada, is also contingent on the Model 3.Tesla says scale from the massive facility will cut the cost of its battery pack by 30 percent to enable the lower-priced vehicle.High expectations ahead of the unveiling have restored Tesla’s shares to around the $230-mark, recovering from a year low of $141.05 in February after analysts cut price targets and revenue expectations.”It is important to the industry because it will signal whether or not Tesla Motors is a major threat to the status quo or just another wannabe car company with a fleeting chance for long-term success,” said Kelley Blue Book’s Jack Nerad.GM is on track to beat Tesla to the market with its Chevrolet Bolt electric car, which GM says will launch late this year, offering about 200 miles of electric driving range and a starting price of around $35,000.A new generation of Nissan Motor Co’s Leaf electric car is also expected to offer more driving range at a similar price. The Model 3 and others in the new generation of electric vehicles face challenges from low gasoline prices, high battery costs and uncertain investment in recharging infrastructure.Through the first two months of this year, sales of all-electric and hybrid vehicles are down nearly 9 percent to 60,384 vehicles, data from trade group the Electric Drive Transportation Association shows. That’s fewer hybrid and battery electric vehicles sold in two months than Ford sold of its F-series large pickup trucks in February alone.Several short-term concerns, such as that Model 3 production will be delayed, and the slow ramp of the Model X will continue, go hand-in-hand with skeptics’ longer-term worries that the unprofitable company will continue to bleed cash.In February, Tesla said it would start generating positive cash flow this month.(Reporting by Alexandria Sage and Joe White; Editing by Clarence Fernandez) The only list that measures privately-held company performance across multiple dimensions—not just revenue. China Bans Autonomous Car Testing for Now

first_img –shares Don Reisinger Self-Driving Cars This story originally appeared on PCMag Contributing Writer July 21, 2016 Image credit: PC Mag Next Article China is putting the brakes on self-driving car testing. The country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology drafted new regulations on self-driving car testing in the country, but until they’re approved, the government has warned companies not to try it out, according to Bloomberg, which obtained a copy of the draft.Self-driving cars are quickly becoming a hot commodity in the auto world as companies from Google to Mercedes-Benz try out the technology in the US, Europe and elsewhere. There’s no timeline on when China might approve its rules, Bloomberg says, but as auto makers eye autonomous car rollouts in the next decade, time is of the essence if China wants to keep up.Major car makers like BMW have already made plans to test self-driving cars in China. In April, Volvo said it would begin negotiations with Chinese cities that want to test Volvo’s autonomous cars using local drivers. The company wanted to use up to 100 cars to see how they work in everyday road conditions. In December, China’s Baidu also announced that its self-driving car — a modified BMW 3 Series — successfully completed testing on mixed roads under various environmental conditions. The 19-mile test drive route began at Baidu’s Beijing headquarters and covered the G7 highway, Fifth Ring Road and Olympic Park, before looping back to the starting point. In the US, semi-autonomous car technology has come under fire following the fatal accident of a Tesla Model S in Autopilot mode. Tesla has denied any wrongdoing, reiterating that Autopilot is semi- and not fully autonomous and promising an upgrade soon, but regulators are investigating. 2 min read China Bans Autonomous Car Testing (for Now) The only list that measures privately-held company performance across multiple dimensions—not just revenue. 2019 Entrepreneur 360 List Add to Queue Apply Now »last_img read more

BGU develops new AI platform for monitoring and predicting ALS progression

first_imgReviewed by Alina Shrourou, B.Sc. (Editor)Feb 20 2019Technology will also improve drug development and clinical trials for neurodegenerative diseasesBen-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) has developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) platform for monitoring and predicting progression of neurodegenerative diseases to help identify markers for personalized patient care and improve drug development. The platform, developed by Prof. Boaz Lerner of the BGU Department of Industrial Engineering and Management will initially be used for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and ultimately for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.”One of the big challenges of designing and managing clinical trials for ALS is that it is a rare disease, and clinical variability makes it hard to identify markers for severity,” says Prof. Lerner. “As a result, after decades of research, there is still no real cure for ALS and several other challenging neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s.”Our new technology will more accurately predict disease progression, a crucial ingredient for clinical trials, and better identify the interrelationships between demographics and other measurable factors identified through physical examinations and patient functionality.”ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes death of motor neurons which control voluntary muscles. This muscle atrophy leads to progressive weakness and paralysis, difficulty speaking, swallowing and breathing. The average survival time for people who are typically diagnosed between ages 40 to 60 is two to five years from onset of symptoms.Related StoriesUsing artificial intelligence to personalize the dose of radiation therapy for cancer patientsNovel imaging molecule reveals brain changes linked to progressive MSEndogenous retrovirus type W found to be a major contributor to nerve damage in MSALS population heterogeneity complicates research and drug development because of symptom variability at onset, disease progression rates and patterns, and survival statistics. This variability makes it difficult to predict disease progression rate and pattern for individuals.Having a reliable personalized prediction platform could improve patient care and quality of life for many patients and their caregivers. The new AI platform could also improve clinical trial design by identifying markers for various patient sub-populations’ treatment. The BGU platform integrates demographic and clinical data with machine learning and data mining algorithms to produce models that can predict the rate and pattern of ALS progression, identify specific lab tests or vital signs, and stratify similar sub-groups from the diverse ALS population. The algorithms, and their ability to predict disease progression, will improve as clinical data is added for each patient.”Now that the algorithms required to produce effective models have been established and evaluated, the funding we received from the Israel Innovation Authority will enable researchers to create a system that patients, physicians, caregivers, pharmaceutical companies, HMOs, and insurers can use on desktop and mobile applications to monitor and predict ALS progression,” says Itzik Mashiach at BGN Technologies, BGU’s technology-transfer company.”We are now seeking an industry partner to further develop and commercialize this innovative patent-pending technology.” Source:https://aabgu.org/nlast_img read more

UMN study shows impact of opioids on pain and survival in sickle

first_img Source:https://www.med.umn.edu/news-events/university-minnesota-researchers-study-effect-chronic-opioid-therapy-pain-and-survival-sickle-cell-disease Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Apr 3 2019New UMN research recently published Blood Advances, Kalpna Gupta, PhD, Professor of Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School, demonstrates the impact of opioids on the survival of humanized mouse models with sickle cell disease, compared to normal mice.Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) affects millions of people throughout the world. The genetic disease worsens over time and can cause lifelong pain. Given the often severe nature of the pain associated with SCD opioid use is a rule not an exception for treatment. The mice in this study showed characteristics of pain observed in patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).Related StoriesAlternate cell growth pathway could open door to new treatments for metastatic cancersNanoparticles used to deliver CRISPR gene editing tools into the cellSleep quality and fatigue among women with premature ovarian insufficiency”We wanted to know if opioids reduce survival,” said Gupta. “There was a distinct difference in survival with morphine treatment between control mice expressing normal human hemoglobin and sickle mice expressing human sickle hemoglobin.” Gupta and her colleagues found that chronic morphine treatment decreased survival in control mice, but not in sickle mice.Adverse effects of opioids from clinical studies in cancer show the association of opioid requirement with reduced survival. Patients with SCD have reduced survival. Since many use opioids long-term, it is critical to know if opioids reduce survival in SCD and if they are really required. Researchers also looked into whether opioids caused hyperalgesia, a condition where a person develops an increased sensitivity to pain. They found that chronic morphine treatment leads to hyperalgesia in sickle mice, but does not lead to analgesic tolerance.”Our findings show that opioids cause hyperalgesia, which means they do cause pain, and that is why there is an increased requirement of morphine as the time goes by, it may not due to the reward function.” This study provides evidence for the first time that opioid requirement in SCD may be genuine and is not causing an adverse effect on survival and that even after long-term use opioids continue to remain effective in treating pain.According to Gupta, it would be critical to perform observational analysis on SCD patients receiving opioids to validate these findings, so that their pain can be managed effectively without opioid phobia amongst the providers. Until alternatives to opioids are found, pain needs to be treated with opioids. However, this study in humanized sickle mice also highlights the unmet need to develop effective analgesics to treat pain in SCD and in many other conditions.last_img read more

Peanut allergy tolerance treatment may increase the risk of anaphylaxis

first_imgBy Sally Robertson, B.Sc.Apr 26 2019Reviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Treating children who have a peanut allergy by gradually exposing them to increasing levels of peanut extract may actually increase their risk of allergic attacks, instead of inducing tolerance, warn researchers from McMaster University. The team found that efforts to desensitize children with peanut oral immunotherapy resulted in three times as many allergic reactions in the “real- world,” compared with peanut avoidance.Children who tried the desensitization method also had more severe reactions, including potentially fatal anaphylactic reactions that required administration of life-saving adrenaline.More than six million people are affected by food allergies across Europe and North America, most of whom are children. While children often grow out of the more common egg or milk allergies by the age of ten, a peanut allergy can persist into adulthood and be a lifelong problem. What is oral immunotherapy?Previous research has suggested that oral immunotherapy, where allergic children are gradually exposed to increasing levels of peanut extract, can desensitize a child to peanuts, reducing their risk of anaphylaxis.Researchers say that despite an increased risk of reactions during the initial exposure phase, the ultimate benefits could last a lifetime. Findings from a study last year provided the most convincing evidence to date that the exposure method can stop peanut ingestion triggering a fatal reaction. However, studies assessing the effectiveness of oral immunotherapy measure the treatment’s success by whether a person can pass a supervised food challenge. Dr. Derek Chu (McMaster University) and colleagues point out that this cannot serve as a predictive measure of a person’s future risk in the real world. The treatment may not work in the ‘real-world’Through the analysis of findings from 12 trials, Chu and team questioned whether the results of desensitization studies can be replicated in the real world and have raised concerns about the safety of such approaches. The research was published in The Lancet. Oral immunotherapy is an emerging experimental treatment for peanut allergy, but its benefits and harms are unclear. We systematically reviewed the efficacy and safety of oral immunotherapy versus allergen avoidance or placebo (no oral immunotherapy) for peanut allergy.”Dr. Derek Chu Safer peanut allergy treatment approaches and rigorous randomised controlled trials that evaluate patient-important outcomes are needed.”center_img The team pooled data available for more than 1,000 children (aged an average of nine years) who had participated in oral immunotherapy trials and whose progress had been followed for one year.“Our study synthesizes all randomized clinical trials comparing peanut oral immunotherapy to no immunotherapy in order to generate the highest quality evidence to inform decision-making,” says Chu.The analysis found that 22.2% of children who underwent oral immunotherapy therapy experienced anaphylactic reactions, compared with 7% who avoided exposure to peanuts.Serious allergic reactions that led to vomiting, hives, abdominal pain, wheezing and asthma were all increased, including potentially fatal attacks where life-saving adrenaline needed to be given. The findings favor avoidance of overall current forms of oral immunotherapy and suggest that children who avoid peanuts altogether have fewer attacks overall.‘More allergic and adverse reactions’Chu adds that although the exposure method can achieve the aim of desensitization, “this outcome does not translate into achieving the clinical and patient-desired aim of less allergic reactions and anaphylaxis over time.”Instead, the outcome is the opposite, he says, with “more allergic and adverse reactions with oral immunotherapy compared with avoidance or placebo.”Chu emphasizes that the study does not denounce current research into oral immunotherapy, but that the method should be more carefully considered, with improvements in safety made and measures of success being aligned with patients’ wishes.last_img read more

Hungary Audi workers in rare strike over wages

first_img © 2019 AFP Audi, one of Hungary’s largest exporters, employs some 13,000 staff in the western city of Gyor where it has made engines since 1994 Flights scrapped as Berlin airports brace for Monday strike Workers at the German car giant Audi’s plant in Hungary called a one-week strike Wednesday over a wage dispute, a rare case of industrial unrest in an economy that relies on the automotive sector. Audi, one of Hungary’s largest exporters, employs some 13,000 staff in the western city of Gyor where it has made engines since 1994. Car-making accounts for almost a third of Hungary’s total industrial output, and around 20 percent of exports. The plant’s largest union – the 9,000-member AHFSZ – said the strike would last from Thursday to January 31 and affect all parts of the facility.AHFSZ leaders told local media that talks with management would continue during the strike, but that it could be extended if no agreement is reached. Some 4,000 of the workforce at the Audi plant downed tools for a two-hour “warning strike” last week. Talks over 2019 wage levels began last September, with workers seeking an 18 percent wage increase.According to AHFSZ, workers at a Mercedes factory in Kecskemet, central Hungary, received a 22 percent wage increase for 2019 without having to resort to strike action.Since Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government tightened strike rules in 2012, industrial action has been rare in Hungary. After new changes to labour laws were passed by parliament in December, unions across the economy have threatened coordinated strike action. That legislation increases the amount of overtime employers can demand from workers and has been dubbed a “slave law” by unions, political parties, and civil groups who have held a series of street demonstrations in protest.center_img Citation: Hungary Audi workers in rare strike over wages (2019, January 23) retrieved 17 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2019-01-hungary-audi-workers-rare-wages.html This document is subject to copyright. I’m a chemist and also president of Pyrotechnics Guild International, an organization that promotes the safe use of fireworks and using them here in the U.S. to celebrate Independence Day and other festivals throughout the year. As a chemist, and someone who leads demonstrations for chemistry students, I consider fireworks a great example of combustion reactions that produce colored fire. But the invention of colored fireworks is relatively recent and not all colors are easy to produce. Early history of fireworks Firecrackers were first invented serendipitously by the Chinese in 200 B.C. But it wasn’t until one thousand years later that Chinese alchemists developed fireworks in 800 A.D. These early fireworks were mostly bright and noisy concoctions designed to scare evil spirits — not the colorful, controlled explosions we see today. Fast forward another millennium and the Italians figured out how to add color by introducing various elements to the flammable mix. Adding the element strontium to a color pyrotechnic mix produces a red flame; copper, blue; barium, green; and sodium for yellow. These Sharks Were Too Busy to Notice a Bigger Predator Watching ThemThe unexpected twist at the end of this feeding frenzy delighted scientists.Credit: NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, Windows to the Deep 2019Your Recommended PlaylistVolume 0%Press shift question mark to access a list of keyboard shortcutsKeyboard Shortcutsplay/pauseincrease volumedecrease volumeseek forwardsseek backwardstoggle captionstoggle fullscreenmute/unmuteseek to %SPACE↑↓→←cfm0-9接下来播放Headbutting Tiny Worms Are Really, Really Loud00:35关闭选项Automated Captions – en-US facebook twitter 发邮件 reddit 链接https://www.livescience.com/65860-why-blue-fireworks-are-rare.html?jwsource=cl已复制直播00:0002:2802:28  Too much or too little of the chemicals make significant changes in the temperature and thus the wavelength of color seen. The proper mixture of chemicals when ignited produce enough energy to excite electrons to give off different colors of light. Even though the chemistry of these colors isn’t new, each generation seems to get excited by the colors splashed across the sky. We now have a wide range of flame colors: red, green, blue, yellow, purple, and variations of these. Each color works the same way. As different elements ignite they release different wavelengths of light which translate as different colors. Making that perfect blue firework Not all colors of fireworks are equally easy to create. I believe several of my colleagues in pyrotechnic research and development would agree with me that blue is the most difficult color to produce. That is because the evening sky is a shade of blue, which means that most blues do not show up as well. If you try to make the blue brighter to contrast with the background it can look washed out. The right balance of copper and other chemicals in the flame or combustion reaction produce the best blue color flame in a firework. I have taken this into account when trying to create the best blue flame color, which I call pill box blue. It is just bright enough to stand out against the night sky but still a rich blue. I have over 20 blue pyrotechnic formulas and I have found one that comes very close to this elusive hue. Another difficulty in creating an intense blue color is that the chemistry is not simple. It requires a combination of several chemicals and the element copper. When copper ignites, the electrons surrounding the copper atoms get excited and energized in the flame. When the electrons release this energy, it appears to observers as blue light. Each color works the same way. As different elements ignite they release different wavelengths of light which translate as different colors. So when you see blue-colored dots of light creating a pattern in the night sky, you really are seeing excited electrons releasing energy as blue light. [Expertise in your inbox. RS bypolls Fearing crossvoting Gujarat Congress shifts its MLAs to Mount Abu

first_imgpolitics Since the 2017 elections, at least six Congress MLAs have changed sides to join the BJP On a day when Rahul Gandhi officially resigned as Congress President and asked the party’s Working Committee to find his replacement, the Gujarat unit of the party was fighting its own battle as it struggled to keep its flock together. Fearing cross-voting in by-polls to the two Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat, the State Congress decided to move its MLAs to Mount Abu in Rajasthan to keep them away from the reach of the ruling BJP. The Congress camp in Gujarat is facing discontent among some of its MLAs who are likely to cross-vote in favour of BJP candidates — S Jaishankar and Jugalji Thakor. The Congress has fielded former MLA Chandrika Chudasama and Gaurav Pandya.Since the 2017 elections, at least six Congress MLAs have changed sides to join the BJP. There is also a strong possibility that rebel Congress MLA and OBC leader Alpesh Thakor and some of his supporting legislators may cross-vote in the Rajya Sabha polling scheduled for Friday. The two Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat were vacated by Union Ministers Amit Shah and Smriti Irani following their election to Lok Sabha from the Gandhinagar and Amethi constituencies, respectively. Congress MLAs led by the Leader of Opposition, Paresh Dhanani, boarded a private bus on Wednesday to travel towards Mount Abu. According to Congress leaders, all but rebel Congress MLAs were travelling together. Dhanani could not be reached for comments. ‘A precautionary move’The party officials termed this as a “precautionary move” to “thwart any attempt by the ruling BJP to influence the MLAs for cross-voting.”Last month, the Congress had directed its legislators to refrain from meeting Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel or other ministers even for matters related to their Assembly constituencies, till the Rajya Sabha by-polls are over. Earlier this week, the Congress issued a whip to all its legislators, including Alpesh Thakor, to vote in favour of the party’s two candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections. ‘Cong has slim chance’But if polling for both the seats are held separately , the Congress is set to lose both the seats for want of numbers as all MLAs would exercise their first preference votes twice. Therefore, the BJP, which has the numerical strength of 100 as against 71 of the Congress, is likely to win both seats.During the Rajya Sabha polls in August 2017, the Congress had moved 44 of its MLAs to a resort in Anand and then to Bengaluru to avoid horse trading and ensure a victory for Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
