AMCC’s Ata, NSU’s Iwaniuk Garner Southland Tennis Weekly Honors

Honorable Mention: Max Heinzel, New Orleans. Iwaniuk and Dancetovic carried that momentum into Sunday’s match, storming back from a 4-1 deficit to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 victory. Iwaniuk capped off her perfect week with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laura Cabrera, improving to 6-3 at No. 2 singles. This is Iwaniuk’s first career Player of the Week award and the second-straight for the Lady Demons after Mariella Minetti earned the recognition last week. Men’s Tennis Player of the Week – Ryuya Ata, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Freshman – Fukoka, JapanAta defeated New Mexico State’s Jordy Visser 6-2, 6-3 and secured the Islanders’ lone point against DePaul with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Christopher Casati. Ata improved to 5-1 at No. 3 singles and 12-1 in solo play overall in 2020. Since suffering his first loss on Feb. 11, he has won three-straight without surrendering more than three games in a set. Honorable Mention: Nini Memishishi, Abilene Christian; Matilde Mulatero, McNeese; Fuka Nonoyama, Central Arkansas; Camille Townsend, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Ata came out on top of both of his No. 3 singles matches and split his No. 2 doubles contests last week at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi. The Islanders (12-4) swept their Friday doubleheader with 4-0 wins over Eastern Washington and New Mexico State before falling to DePaul 4-1 on Saturday. Having played 16 matches in the first month of the season, the team’s only match for the next two weeks is against UTSA at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26.center_img Iwaniuk led the Lady Demons to a pair of crucial home wins over Southern Miss (4-2) and UTSA (4-0) on Friday and Sunday, respectively, to close out non-conference play. She went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend with two wins each at No. 2 singles and top-line doubles. Northwestern State (7-3) hits the road to open Southland Conference play against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at noon Friday and Lamar at 11 a.m. Sunday. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week – Ela Iwaniuk, Northwestern State – Senior – Konarskie, PolandAgainst a previously undefeated Southern Miss squad, Iwaniuk issued the first loss of the season to her No. 2 singles opponent Katia de la Garza 6-1, 6-2. Iwaniuk and doubles partner Emilija Dancetovic blanked the Golden Eagles’ top-line duo of Monique Burton and Sarah Medik, 6-0, to hand them their first defeat on the year as well. Ata and teammate Kyohei Yamanaka posted their second-straight 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles against Eastern Washington on Friday but dropped their first match together against New Mexico State by a score of 6-4.
