first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State’s Noah Steele and UIW’s Lauren Mancha are the Southland Conference February Golfers of the Month, the league announced Wednesday.Steele competed in a pair of events throughout the month for the Bearkats, tying for third place individually at the All-American Intercollegiate (Feb. 16-18) in Houston, Texas, before taking medalist honors at the Border Olympics (Feb. 24-25) in Laredo, Texas. The senior shot a 67 in his final 18 at the All-American Intercollegiate, boosting his Kats’ squad to a first-place team finish.Mancha competed at the Islander Classic (Feb. 24-25) in Corpus Christi, Texas, taking first place overall and pushing the Cardinals to a third-place team finish. She shot a 218 for the tournament and recorded a round-low 69 in the second round of play.February Golfer of the Month: Noah Steele – Sr. – Kingston, Ontario Steele had a stellar month on the links, posting a sub-70 scoring average over his six rounds of play. He tied for third overall at the All-American, helping lead the Bearkats to a tournament victory in a field that included four ranked teams. At the Border Olympics, Steele shot a tournament-low 66 in the opening round and held off the field on the final day for his third collegiate victory of his career.Honorable Mention: Alex Clouse, Abilene Christian; Cody Banach, Lamar; Warut Wongrungroj, Nicholls.February Golfer of the Month: Lauren Mancha – Sr. – Spring Branch, Texas Lauren Mancha was the individual champion at the Islander Classic, guiding UIW women’s golf team to a third-place finish in the 14-team field at the Corpus Christi Country Club. This is Mancha’s first career tournament win. She finished with a 218 (+2) overall score, one stroke ahead of the runner-up. Mancha carded a 3-under-69 second round, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 No. 2 to close out the second round. She recorded 11 birdies and an eagle throughout the 54-hole tournament.Honorable Mention: Aysis Azarcon, Houston Baptist; Laura Pasalodos Barcelo, Lamar; Leah Alberto, Sam Houston State; Autumn Bynum, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.Southland monthly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director.
