Windies Women win first T20 World Cup

first_imgKOLKATA, India (CMC):Teenager Hayley Matthews and captain Stafanie Taylor fashioned half-centuries as West Indies Women produced a superb run chase to beat three-time defending champions Australia Women by eight wickets and lift their first-ever Twenty20 World Cup title here yesterday.Set 149 for victory at the historic Eden Gardens, West Indies Women reached their target with three balls to spare, with the 18-year-old Matthews top-scoring with 66 from 45 balls and the in-form Taylor getting 59 from 57 balls. The pair put on a magnificent 120 for the first wicket to take Australia Women out of the contest and even when Matthews fell in the 16th over, Deandra Dottin (18 not out) joined Taylor to add 24 for the second wicket to keep the Caribbean side on top.West Indies Women entered the final over requiring three to win and Dottin reduced the target even further with a single to cover off seamer Ellyse Perry.Britney Cooper, who finished on three not out, failed to score off the next delivery, but took off for a suicide single off the third ball. The fielder at short midwicket missed a direct hit at the bowler’s end that would have seen Cooper on her way and the resulting overthrow handed West Indies Women the crucial win.The result sparked scenes of jubilation across the outfield as the remainder of the women’s team, along with members of the men’s team, ran on to the ground to celebrate.ELATED TAYLOR”I am (on top of the world). I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” an elated Taylor said afterwards.”I think it has actually come at the right time because we’ve played some fantastic cricket today. We didn’t get the start that we wanted with the ball, but I think the batting gave us the edge.”Matthews, who struck six fours and three sixes to post her maiden T20 International half-century, was voted Player of the Match, while Taylor was adjudged Player of the Tournament for her 246 runs overall.Earlier, Australia Women captain Meg Lanning and Elyse Villani both struck 52 to get the title favourites up to 148 for five off their 20 overs, after opting to bat first.Alyssa Healy fell cheaply for four at 15 for one in the second over when she tapped a low return catch to off-spinner Matthews, but Lanning and Villani put on 77 for the second wicket to rally the innings.Lanning faced 49 balls and gathered eight fours, while opener Villani counted nine fours in her 37-ball innings.”We probably did not get the result that we wanted, but congratulations to West Indies for the way they batted,” Lanning said. “We felt we were a little short, 160 would have been nice. But if we had bowled well we would have defended.”last_img read more

Restructuring Plan for NOCAL

first_imgThe Board of Directors of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) has announced that the company has embarked on an internal re-organization exercise aimed at ensuring the survival of the entity.Addressing the company’s management and staff Friday, August 21, at a general staff meeting in Monrovia, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Counselor Seward Cooper, explained that the continuing fall in the price of oil on the global market has caused serious fiscal difficulties for the company. He said despite the best efforts of the board and the management to put in place several austerity measures to manage the situation, the continuing crumbling oil prices have severely undermined NOCAL’s capacity to meet its operational and personnel obligations.Accordingly, he regretted that the company is left with no options other than putting in place a company-wide restructuring plan to include personnel and related administrative and operational adjustments that could significantly reduce the entity’s overhead costs.Disclosing that the management will work out the details of the plan with each staff/employee in the coming weeks, Counselor Cooper called on the NOCAL family to show understanding for the personnel reduction and re-arrangement scheme. He stressed that the restructuring and administrative adjustments will affect every layer of the company, including the Board and Management, and a new recruitment of re-employment exercise will be guided by the highest standard of transparency, with the Board having hired an external consultant to carry out the entire process. The NOCAL board chairman also emphasized that what is taking place at the company is not unique, as several State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the country and usually productive sectors such as Agriculture and Mining continue to struggle to stay afloat in the face of the overall decline in global economic activities.Counselor Cooper then reminded the NOCAL staff and employees that “despite the unfortunate and unexpected situation that we at NOCAL find ourselves in now, we must nevertheless never forget that NOCAL has had some good times that have benefitted not only the NOCAL family, but the Government and people of this country as a whole.”He declared, “We are indeed very proud of what NOCAL, at the best of times, has done for our people, especially in regard to our CSR interventions in such areas as granting local and international scholarships, support to the University of Liberia, capacity building for our young people, public transportation, the efforts to beat back the Ebola virus, water and sanitation, among others.”He then appealed to the workforce that despite “these hard times that have hit us, we must all now come together to stand as one family to deal with the situation in a way that can help our sector and country move forward.”He then thanked the management and staff for the quality level of productivity each and every one of them has rendered to NOCAL and by extension to the country and encouraged those employees who wish to continue to work at a restructured NOCAL not to hesitate to apply for positions that will be advertised in due course.Following a question and answer period, during which employees sought clarification on the re-organization plan, some staff expressed thanks to the board and management for the briefing, saying they look forward to timely receiving their severance packages, a press release from NOCAL said yesterday.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Curry shows the NBA what a real MVP performance looks like

first_imgOn Sunday night, presumptive MVP frontrunner James Harden scored 38 points for the Houston Rockets in Orlando, tying Kobe Bryant’s NBA record for most consecutive 30-point games with 16.But how Harden went about scoring those 38 points is important context to consider. There’s no way to sugar coat this: It was a gross performance — Harden went 1-of-17 from beyond the arc and needed 16 free throw attempts to reach the number.Compare that to the sterling game Stephen Curry turned in Sunday …last_img

Seeing Sound and Hearing Light

first_imgSynesthesia, the syndrome in which people’s senses become confused, may not be so off the wall.  Research at the University of British Columbia “flips the traditional view of how we perceive the world on its head.” Experiments show that our brains perceive the world by synthesizing multiple inputs.  The latest evidence of this is that we can “hear” through our skin.    BBC News and Live Science reported on experiments by Bryan Gick at the U of BC that show blindfolded subjects perceive words differently when receiving puffs of air on their skin.  He believes that this is very different from traditional interpretations of sense organs as independent channels of perception.  According to Gick, humans are “whole-body perceiving machines.”  The research, he believes, could lead to more effective hearing aids and prostheses for the blind and deaf. Our bodies are marvelously designed whole entities.  Evolution cannot “tinker” with one thing without affecting other things.  Applying a proverb by John Muir to anatomy, the more we try to pick out one function, the more we find it tied to everything else in the body.(Visited 36 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

A World Cup to remember

first_img12 July 2010The 2010 Fifa World Cup concluded in fine style on Sunday, with the Spanish national side raising the coveted trophy as champions for the first time. As the curtain fell on the historic event, fans reflected on what made the tournament so special for them.Clad in their national colours, Spanish fans celebrated as they left Soccer City stadium for the last time, as victors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.With tears of joy in his eyes and his hand on his heart, Juan Toral stood with the profile of the stadium behind him, amazed that out of the 64 games, 32 teams and many weeks of football, his team would return home as world champions. “I never thought I would live to see this day,” said Toral. “Tonight we showed the world we are the best, this is a dream come true. Thank you to the people of South Africa.”“It is an amazing day,” said Carlos Cuadrado. “We as the fans of Spain will remember this day and this tournament forever. South Africa will always be special for us, the country will always be in our hearts and minds.”Results aside, many visiting fans have travelled to South Africa for the first time and will return home with fond memories of the hospitable nature of the country.“South Africans have welcomed us all over,” said Spaniard Raul Rodriguez. “It is an incredible country. The atmosphere is fantastic, the landscape is beautiful and people are really friendly. South Africa is on the right path to become a greater country.“I have been very impressed with the support for my team,” Rodriguez added. “I have never seen so many Spanish flags outside of my own country.”For Luiz Goncalves, a Brazilian fan, the hosting of a successful tournament in South Africa has changed his perceptions of the continent. “This is the way a World Cup should be,” Goncalves said. “It has been amazing here, and we hope Brazil can do the same as South Africa and host a great World Cup. I’ve told all my friends back in Brazil that Africa is living la vida loca.”Many fans returning home will offer a different perspective of the host country. “It is not like I read about before coming here,” said Chantal Schinkels, a Dutch fan who has flown to South Africa and followed her team over the last three weeks. “This tournament has changed the view around Africa and South Africa. People have enjoyed it around the world, and I have heard only positive news in the press. This is something I will tell my grandchildren about.”The Fifa World Cup is the pinnacle of international football and as such the tournament offers fans the unique experience of seeing so many stars performing at the highest level.“This final marks our twentieth game in the tournament and I have loved the football,” said local resident Dicky Naiker. “To see players such as Torres and Drogba playing here in South Africa makes us proud. Them coming here, to our country, is mind blowing. I hope the World Cup comes back in my lifetime.”For Zimbabwean national Aaron Chinhara, the World Cup has renewed his love for Africa. “Today I am proud to be African. Throughout this tournament we have seen people from all races, tribes, creeds mingling together nicely. This is a step ahead. We are no longer the continent of disease and poverty, but the continent of joy, happiness and good.”Source: 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Organising Committeelast_img read more
