Washington State Announces New Contract For Mike Leach

(Photo by William Mancebo/Getty Images)The Washington State Cougars and head football coach Mike Leach have agreed to a contract extension that keeps Leach with the team through 2023, the school announced on Wednesday afternoon.After leading the team to a school-record 11 wins during the 2018 college football season, Leach received a one-year extension from the school.Additionally, defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys also agreed to a contract that runs through the 20201 season.Athletic director Pat Chun released a statement about the news.“Coach Mike Leach has built a nationally prominent football program at Washington State and our student-athletes continue to excel athletically and academically under his leadership. His ability to create and steward a winning culture, combined with his vision and expertise, make him one of the elite coaches in the entire sport of football.Few coaches could have accomplished what Coach Leach did in 2018. There is no greater head football coach for WSU than Mike Leach and we are happy to have him leading our program for many years to come.”Since taking over Washington State in 2012, Leach has compiled a 49-40 record. Each of the past four seasons have ended with at least eight wins and 2018 was the best yet.Leach led the Cougars to a No. 10 ranking during the 2018 season that ended with a bowl victory over Iowa State.He’ll be searching for a new starting quarterback after Gardner Minshew graduated and left for the NFL.last_img
