Volleyball Splits Two Matches On Final Day Of The Omaha Classic

first_img vs. Omaha Box Score (HTML) vs. UMKC Box Score (HTML) OMAHA, Neb. – The Drake University volleyball team improved to 6-2 on the season by going 1-1 on the final day of the Omaha Classic with a loss to UMKC and a win over Omaha on Saturday, Sept. 3The Bulldogs opened the day with a grueling, 5-set loss to UMKC by set scores of 25-19, 23-25, 33-35, 25-13, 15-5 and then defeated homestanding Omaha in four sets, 25-20, 29-31, 25-16, 25-18. With the split on the day, the Bulldogs finished the two-day tournament with a 2-1 record.Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.) and Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with 29 kills each on the day and a total of four double-doubles as they had 64 combined digs. Michelle Thommi (Omaha, Neb.) also added 55 digs from her libero spot on the day. Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.), who had 46 assists on Saturday, was named to the Omaha Classic all-tournament team.Drake opened the day by splitting the first two sets with UMKC. Drake prevailed in the second set, 25-23, thanks to a kill from Kameo Pope (Belle Plaine, Iowa) and ace from Schofield to break a 23-23 tie. The marathon third set featured 19 ties with neither team leading by more than two points at any juncture. A kill from Capris Quaites (Omaha, Neb.) staved off the first set point and later kills from Inderski and Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) gave Drake a 29-28 lead. Drake later faced a 33-32 deficit, but a kill from Nicole Woods (St. Charles, Ill.) followed by back-to-back kills from Schofield turned the tables and gave Drake the 35-33 set win. Unfortunately, that extended set seemed to take the energy out of the Bulldogs as they fell, 25-13 and 15-5 in the final two sets.Just a few hours after dropping that heartbreaker, the Bulldogs returned to the court rejuvenated against Omaha. A big 6-0 run in the first set behind Paige Aspinwall’s (Dayton, Minn.) serving led Drake to the 25-20 set win. The second set went beyond regulation before a pair of errors gave Omaha the 31-29 win to even the match. Drake answered by starting the third set on a 10-0 run behind Davidson’s serving to cruise to a 25-16 win. Drake again opened an early lead in the fourth set, and with a 19-16 lead late in the set, scored six of the next eight points to take the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-1.The Bulldogs return to the court on Friday, Sept. 9, with the first of three games at the Eastern Illinois Tournament.
