first_imgWe might be justified in moaning that we never really had a summer in Donegal.But the latest weather facts for the past few months throw up an amazing stat.The highest number of sunshine hours across Ireland in a day came at Malin Head, on June 2 when nearly a whopping 16 hours were recorded. That’s one of many weather facts thrown up by Met Eireann.It might have been the warmest summer in the last 10 years but as holidaymakers will testify, the season was still wetter than normal.On average it was slightly warmer than usual right across the country, with the weather station at Dublin Airport reporting its warmest summer since 2006.The summer reached its peak just after mid July when temperatures soared to the high twenties. The highest temperature of the year was recorded in Roscommon, where the mercury hit a scorching 30°C.That peak still fell comfortably short of the highest temperature ever recorded in Ireland which stands at 33.3°C, recorded at Kilkenny Castle on June 26th 1887.The lowest temperatures for the summer this year nearly all came during the first few days of June and July.It was slightly wetter than normal right across Ireland with the heaviest rainfall coming in the east of the country during June.The highest daily rainfall total fell on Sherkin Island, off the coast of west Cork, on August 1, which recorded its wettest summer day in 18 years. Overall the summer was much duller than the previous months with the sunshine totals nearly all significantly lower than the those reported during spring.The station at Knock Airport reported its dullest summer since the station opened in 1996 while Dublin Airport had its dullest summer since 1987.Conditions started to get increasingly windy during August with several stations in the west, southwest and south reporting their windiest August conditions in up to ten years.There were gale force winds on four days during the month, all in Atlantic coastal areas, with the highest gust and wind speed both coming at Malin Head on August 7.
