Martinez admits concern over Everton’s ‘alarming’ defensive display against Chelsea

first_imgEverton manager Roberto Martinez admits he was left concerned by his side’s shocking defensive display that allowed Chelsea to score six in a nine-goal thriller at Goodison Park. The Toffees were given a mountain to climb after their slow start saw the Blues opened up a 2-0 lead after just three minutes. And while Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and debutant Samuel Eto’o all netted as the hosts attempted to fight back, their shaky back-four were ruthlessly exposed by the rampant visitors.Martinez was keen to highlight the positives of his team’s spirited performance, yet the Spaniard conceded their form at the back must improve after failing to record a win in their opening three games of the new season.“Conceding six goals isn’t the concern, the real concern is the ten we’ve conceded in our first three games,” said the Spanish boss, whose side played out 2-2 draws against Leicester and Arsenal in their previous fixtures.“That’s not us at all, especially when you look at the experience and the know-how in our defence.“That defence has over 1,100 Premier League appearances between them and we had 15 clear sheets last season, but at the moment it seems there’s a fearful feeling every time we have to defend.“Today it was different, when you concede two goals so quickly it becomes a battle to even get back into the game.“We had to take a gamble in order to catch up and it became a really end-to-end game.“I’m sure it was great for the neutral, but it was very alarming at times the way we defended with so little confidence.“But on the other hand, the way we got on the ball, kept control for long spells and scored three goals shows the positives and strengths of our side – not many teams will score three against Chelsea this season.“I thought our attacking play was worthy of more than three goals, but you just can’t concede that amount of goals in the manner we did.“We know we have to improve now for the rest of the season.”last_img
