The Leadership Playbook: Accountability and Consequences

first_imgRecently, I had a conversation with a person who told me that one of the leaders in her company led “with the stick.” His view was that a leader leads with something negative instead of positive. It would go too far to suggest that he was saying that this leader chose force, or manipulation because neither of those comes close to the truth. What this person was saying about the leader was that he holds people accountable.Accountability means that you are responsible for producing some outcome. In order for accountability to work, there must be consequences. The consequences don’t need to be dire, like losing your job, but there must be consequences, otherwise, there is no accountability.Leaders are accountable. It is part of the role and one that cannot be avoided. The best leaders embrace accountability, recognizing that the responsibility to produce a result is what empowers them to take actions that produce that result. What leaders are accountable for is a better future state. There may not be a greater responsibility. The accountability for producing a result creates a cascade of accountabilities that reach lower levels of responsibility within a company. Because the leader is accountable, they hold their executive level team members accountable for producing results, empowering them to take action. But also empowering them to hold the people that work for them accountable for producing results necessary for moving the organization forward or producing some outcome. Because the leader cannot avoid accountability, no one at the lower levels can either.Lately,  I’ve been listening to a lot of commentary on the problems with hierarchies. But there are two kinds of hierarchies, dominator hierarchies, and growth hierarchies. A dominator hierarchy will use force and manipulation to achieve the results, and the accountability for producing those results will not likely be a pleasant experience, nor will it likely occur in a culture that provides meaning or purpose in work. Accountability will feel completely different in a growth hierarchy. Instead of using power or force, the leaders will instead use inspiration and influence. They will care deeply about ensuring that the people they hold accountable have everything they need to succeed, including their continued support in their concern about the people they hold accountable individually. One of the primary things a growth hierarchy expects in the way of accountability is personal and professional growth. It’s a nurturing environment where people have the opportunity to become the best version of themselves. But even in a growth hierarchy, accountability means consequences. In this case, it may mean retraining or reassignment. Growth hierarchies tend to care about individuals and take care of them. This allows them to create greater accountability because people have the psychological safety to accept responsibility-in whatever consequences come with them. Get the Free eBook! A day after its inauguration, breach in Konar irrigation project embankment

first_imgA day after the Konar Irrigation project was inaugurated by Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, water flow to Giridih district’s Bagodar area under the scheme was stopped following a breach in an embankment on Thursday, an official said. Work to repair the embankment was on, so water flow to Bagodar area of Giridih district under the Konar Irrigation project was stopped, the official said. Additional Chief Secretary, Water Resources Department, Arun Kumar Singh in a tweet said after getting information about the washing away of a part of embankment and damage to crops on Thursday, a report was summoned from the chief engineer of the Water Resources Department, Hazaribag. Prima facie, ‘rat holes’ caused the damage to the ‘kacha’ embankment, breaching 25/30 feet near Kusumraja village in Giridih district’s Bagodar block, he said. A high-level team headed by chief engineer, ‘agrim yojana’ (plan in advance project) of the department has been set up, asking it to submit a report within 24 hours, he said. The chief minister on Wednesday inaugurated the first phase of Konar Irrigation Project to benefit 85 villages in Hazaribag, Giridih and Bokaro districts of the State.last_img read more

Waqar Younis slams Shahid Afridi after Pakistan’s World T20 debacle

first_imgCoach Waqar Younis has criticised captain Shahid Afridi for his casual attitude during the Asia Cup and ICC World Twenty20 in a report submitted to the Pakistan Cricket Board. According to ESPNCricinfo, who claim to have a copy of Waqar’s report, the former Pakistan skipper has also questioned PCB’s selection criteria.”Shahid Afridi didn’t attend few meetings, practice – and this is not how a captain leads from the front. (Also Read: Ramiz Raja, Mohammad Yousuf blame Waqar Younis for Pakistan’s decline)”We lost to New Zealand, Asia Cup and the World T20 due to poor captaincy. Over several occasions, I had made it clear that Shahid Afridi was not performing with the bat, ball or as a captain but I was not listened to. Poor tactics, really cost us matches. A meeting was held after the New Zealand T20 series, where the boys emphasised that they felt confused with what the captain was telling them to do,” the report stated.Pakistan suffered early exits at the Asia Cup and World T20 and also lost series in New Zealand prior to the mega event.About the selection criteria, Waqar also slammed selection of Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad and further recommended the duo to go back to domestic cricket. (Also Read: Shahid Afridi begs for forgiveness after Pakistan’s horror show in World T20)”All the time he (Akmal) managed to retain his place back in the team. Is this the criteria we are setting for the selection of a new player? Andrew Symonds was a very talented player for Australia or Kevin Pietersen for England but due to their behaviour they were dropped and never picked again irrespective of their talent.advertisement”Are we bold enough to take this step or do we fear the media or pressure from different people to play certain players? I can assure you that sacrificing one Umar Akmal will allow us to develop other players who can truly and proudly wear the star on their chest and represent Pakistan,” he said.Waqar said he was surprised by Shehzad’s recall into the side, calling the selectors “bullies”.”This was a complete knee-jerk reaction, how can you consider a player in one tour when you have dropped him in a previous tour? What is the criteria to be selected? To gain support from the media and then bring back into the team, this is bullying and not a good example for others to follow,” he said in his six-page report.last_img read more

Environmental toxins impair fertility of future generations

first_imgExposure to environmental pollutants can cause alterations in brain development that affect sexual development and fertility for several generations, a study has found. Researchers from the University of Liege in Belgium monitored the sexual development of three generations of rats. Pregnant rats were exposed to a mixture of common endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), at doses equivalent to those commonly experienced by people. Their offspring showed impairments in sexual development and maternal behaviour that were passed on through several generations. Also Read – The Puja carnivalThe female rats born in the first and second generation showed impairments in their care for their own pups. However, the female rats in the second and third generation exhibited a delayed onset of puberty and altered reproductive cycle and ovarian follicle development, indicating that their fertility was affected, even though they were never themselves exposed to the EDCs. “Our results raise real concerns about the effects of these pollutants in our environment. We found effects of EDCs in generations of animals that had not been directly exposed to the chemicals,” said Anne-Simone Parent from the University of Liege. Also Read – Wave City brings special offers this NavratraThe findings suggest that current levels of EDCs in our environment may already be causing long-lasting harm and that people and agencies should take measures to minimise exposure. We are exposed to hundreds of these pollutants in our daily lives, as they are used in the manufacture of plastics, pesticides and medicines. However, the extent of damage being done to our health and the consequences to future generations remains unclear.last_img read more
