All are understandably secretive about exactly what they are doing. TheFinancial Services Authority (FSA), said: “It’s important that members ofstaff are aware of any threat. We carry out the usual safety measures in linewith those other companies are undertaking.” Barclays Capital was similarlyvague: “[We have] appropriate measures in place and we remain vigilant. Weare consistently monitoring the situation and are in touch with the appropriateauthorities.” According to HSBC, communication is key. The bank has been the target ofterrorism before, when its Istanbul office was hit by a car bomb last year. Aspokesman said the most important action was to keep staff regularly updatedregarding security and any particular threats should be immediatelycommunicated to staff. Rory Murphy, joint-general secretary of trade union Unifi, and, from today, assistant general secretary of Amicus, said he believes the UK isbetter-prepared for terrorism than other countries. He said companies should tell staff exactly what they know about anythreats, keep talking to employees and not to be frightened of any dangers. But Mike Emmott, employee relations adviser at the Chartered Institute ofPersonnel and Development (CIPD), warns that it is important employers andindividuals do not over-react. “It might not always involve communicating with staff; it dependsentirely whether there is anything useful to say,” he said. Melville Hall Airport upgrade described as a step in the right direction.

first_img Tweet Approach to Melville Hall airport in northern Dominica. Photo credit: andersssvensson.sePresident of the Dominica Hotel & Tourism Association Simon Walsh says, the recently completed upgrade to the Melville Hall Airport which includes night landing capability is a step in the right direction. The DHTA has been an advocate for improved accessibility into Dominica, as they note it is a necessity if the tourism sector is to reach its full potential where all stakeholders can benefit.“We’ve been saying that the biggest challenge to the growth of the tourism industry is air access. There is a lot of talk and usually politically motivated talk about air access and international airport, but the most important thing is that we increase the capacity and the number of seats coming into Dominica and we need to do that quickly. We need a short term plan that will bring in more flights into Dominica, so the upgrade of the airport is a step in the right direction.”Mr Walsh commended the effort made at upgrading the airport which is now more attractive and professional.  He also noted the extension of the runway as a step in the right direction.“Anyone travelling through the airport has got to recognize the fact that the experience at the airport now is a superior one than it was five years ago. It is a much more attractive airport, more professionally looking and is a nice place to travel through now on a small scale ofcourse. The extension of the runway is an important step in the right direction” he said. While Mr. Walsh applauds the capability for night landing, he says there must be proper marketing and promotion to create a demand, which will cause the airlines to schedule late flights into Dominica.“People think that if you build it they will come, like the movie says; “if you build it they will come but its not true. You have to market it, you have to be out there promoting it, there has to be a demand for it and the airlines have to see that they can make money doing it. We have proved that we have the night landing capability, now we have to prove that there is a demand for that and the airlines will fly. If there’s going to be a profit for the airlines they will fly, if you don’t have the capacity or capability to do it, you can’t promote it, you cannot expect that the airlines will ever take you seriously.”He concluded, “overall the upgrade is certainly a step in the right direction and the introduction of Air BVI a nineteen-seater which comes into Melville Hall three times per week from St. Martin which is an “excellent hub to be using.”According to a press release issued on July 4th by the Discover Dominica Authority, “Three times weekly, North American and European travellers wishing to visit Dominica can connect on the same day with non-stop service to Melville Hall Airport, Dominica (DOM) via BVI Airways from Princess Juliana International Airport, St. Maarten (SXM). Passengers on flights arriving into St. Maarten on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays before 5:00PM can connect into Dominica on BVI Airways flight 206 departing Princess Juliana International at 6:00PM. Dominica Vibes News Sharing is caring! Indian Premier League Delhi Capitals script history, win a playoff game in IPL in 11 years

first_imgIn the 2008 semi-final against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils were left chasing a big target of 193 thanks to Shane Watson’s aggressive 52. In response, they woefully stumbled to 87 all out and lost the match by 105 runs to bow out of the tournament miserably. In the 2009 IPL, Delhi Daredevils had topped the group and were facing Deccan Chargers in the semifinal at Centurion Park.Tillakaratne Dilshan hit a blazing fifty as they reached 153/8 but a magnificent assault by Adam Gilchrist, who blasted 85 off 35 balls helped Deccan Chargers win by six wickets and qualify for the final. In the 2012 IPL, the new playoff format was introduced when the top two teams would get two chances to qualify for the playoffs. Delhi Daredevils squared off against Kolkata Knight Riders in the first qualifier at the MCA stadium in Pune.Chasing 163, Delhi Daredevils found the going tough and they stumbled by 18 runs. In the second qualifier against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram stadium, Murali Vijay blasted 113 and MS Dhoni’s team reached 222/5. In response, Delhi Daredevils never got going and plagued with team composition issues, they lost by 86 runs. This was the last time the Delhi franchise had qualified for the playoffs. In 2019, they once again encounter Chennai Super Kings in the second qualifier. Unlike in 2012, they would be hoping to snap their losing streak against Dhoni’s side who are slightly low on confidence after losing to Mumbai Indians for the fourth consecutive time. Kane Williamson decided to toss the bowl to Basil Thampi but the move backfired. Rishabh Pant blasted two fours and two sixes in the 18th over and 22 runs were scored. The left-hander smashed another six off Bhuvneshwar Kumar and despite some tense moments towards the end, Delhi Capitals ended their losing streak in the playoffs as they won the Eliminator by two wickets to set-up a clash against Chennai Super Kings in the second qualifier. In the process, Delhi Capitals finally broke their jinx in the IPL playoffs and it showed that a change in the franchise name has indeed given them rich dividends. In the previous four instances when Delhi Daredevils had qualified for the playoffs, they were beaten miserably. In the first two editions of the IPL in 2008 and 2009, Delhi Daredevils had performed brilliantly in the league stages but failed miserably in the playoffs. Fifa World Cup 2026 bidding process delayed

first_imgThe bidding process for the 2026 World Cup has been postponed amid allegations around the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke said it was “a nonsense” to begin the process in the current climate. The vote to decide who will host the 2026 World Cup is due to take place in Kuala Lumpur in May 2017.The United States are front-runners to stage the tournament, but Canada, Mexico and Colombia are also thought to be interested.Russia and Qatar were selected to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups by a secret ballot of Fifa’s 22 executive members in December 2010.But Swiss prosecutors are now investigating alleged financial irregularities surrounding the bidding process. Both Russia and Qatar have denied any wrongdoing. Football’s world governing body had planned to inform its member federations this week of the bidding schedule for 2026, but Valcke said: “Due to the situation, I think it’s nonsense to start any bidding process for the time being.”Speaking in the Russian city of Samara, Valcke also defended Fifa’s handling of a $10m (£6.5m) payment from the South African government towards a Caribbean diaspora legacy programme.US prosecutors allege the payment was a bribe to help secure the 2010 World Cup for South Africa. The South African government insists it was a legitimate payment to promote Caribbean football.”It was not Fifa’s money. It was a request from official South African authorities and the South African Football Association (SAFA). As long as it is in line with rules we do it,” said Valcke. “I don’t understand what’s the problem and why I am such a target in this question.”Fifa president Sepp Blatter has announced he will step down from his role, amid the ongoing allegations of corruption in the governing body, including the indictment of 14 people on corruption charges by US authorities. He is expected to be replaced at an election on 16 December. When faced with questions over his own future, Valcke said: “You – the media – have decided that after Blatter I am the head to be cut, fine, but don’t say it is because of this $10m.”Meanwhile, Uefa chief and former France international Michel Platini declined to comment further on the Fifa scandal. Platini has previously called for change in Fifa, but speaking at a news conference to mark a year until the start of the European Championship, which France is hosting, he said it was “not the time nor the place” to discuss Fifa matters.”I do not want the news about Fifa to get in the way of news about Uefa,” he said, adding he would “address these matters” as well as speculation he could stand for Fifa president at some point in the future.last_img read more

How much cheaper is flying today?

first_imgLondon to SydneyOne example is the London to Sydney route. The downward spiral of the cost is spectacular. In 1945, the return airfare was the equivalent of 130 weeks’ average salary. This was a fortune by anyone’s standards and equivalent today to $204,000 Australian dollars for the average Australian worker.By 1965 with the widespread introduction of the Douglas DC-8 and Boeing 707, it had dropped to 21 weeks and with the Boeing 747 in the early 1970s that figure reduced to eight weeks. In 1991, it was equivalent to five weeks’ average salary for an Australian and in 2013 it accounts for just over one week’s average earnings. If the trend continues, analysts suggest that by 2020 the return airfare from Sydney to London will be just three days’ average earnings.last_img
